Chief Goods: Hometown Hero

"No, because we were f*cking great.
I don't know if you heard but we sold like
70 million f*cking albums."

- Noel Gallagher on not discouraging his kids to form a band

It's been a while since we had Noel Gallagher on the mind but the brains behind OASIS is back with a European tour and recently won Best Album for his High Flying Birds' second album, Chasing Yesterday. We saw The Chief play downtown Los Angeles back in May and he put on a heck of a show. Since then the well reviewed album has yielded four singles and gone Gold in the UK while landing in the Top Ten charts around the world from Australia, Ireland, Japan and Switzerland. Last night Gallagher was spotted backstage at U2's London show where the mega band is currently in residency. Noel didn't simply spectate as he joined long time friend Bono and the boys on stage for I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and a cover of All You Need Is Love.

Chief Goods: Ask Me An Interview

"Because I went to a fucking donut shop once in Montreal, and all the staff spoke French!
And last time I looked - France was on the other side of the fucking world.
So I say to the people of Montreal - au revoir. Hahahaha!"

- Noel Gallagher on why the High Flying Birds aren't stopping in Montreal

A friend texted me from Atlanta where she was watching Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds perform at a festival. It only took her 20 years but she finally realized how Damme good The Chief really is. Noel's on tour for his well received album Chasing Yesterday and will be playing in Los Angeles next week. Tickets are aplenty on StubHub, part of the bullshit that is TicketMaster. We'll see how I feel on show night but I would like to see him again since we saw him on the inaugural tour. Always known for his passionate and knowledgeable diatribes against humanity and the current state of music, Rolling Stone awarded him a makeshift award for Best Rock Interview.

While in New York, Noel took part in a Redditt Ask Me Anything where the above classic quote came from and performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Chief Goods: Hypocrite

A few years ago Noel Gallagher commented that he didn't like the fact that Jay-Z was headlining a night at the Glastonbury Festival. His main point being that generally guitar driven rock and pop acts had headlined in the past including his own band Oasis, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, The Who, Paul McCartney, Muse and Radio Head among others. Ticket sales were sluggish and the festival looked like it wouldn't sell out for the first time in 15 years. Gallagher thought the hip-hop superstar was the wrong artist for the job and was promptly called a racist and an angry old man. Jay-Z started his set with a mocking rendition of Oasis' Wonderwall while strumming a plastic white guitar. Cut to today and Oasis has broken up and Noel is a successful solo artist while Jay-Z is a corporation onto himself with their media made beef ancient news.

In an interesting development, 100,000 people have signed a petition to block hip-hop superstar with his own opinions, Kanye West, from headlining this years Glastonbury. The petition basically attacks Kanye's outspoken view of himself and music and asks for a rock band instead. While ticket refund requests have only numbered in the single digits, it seems like the internet has spoken on their feelings for Kanye. But honestly, 100,000 e-signatures isn't much in the grand scheme of things, he's probably sold more records than that in a day before. It's just interesting that nobody is being called a racist or angry old man now for pointing out the fact that some people don't like Kanye or his music and want a rock band to headline. And that my friends is what happens when you have an opinion, people attack you. Even when it's supported by facts! Happened to Noel, happened to Kanye. Noel just comes off a bit more clever and less egotistical. So keep educating yourself, say what you mean and mean what you say.

Chief Goods: Chasing Yesterday

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' new album, Chasing Yesterday, drops next week. With festival appearances and a world tour in the wings, it's been a welcome rush of interviews and Gallagher related soundbites. I've been listening to Chasing Yesterday daily for the last two weeks so how does it stack up in the solo Gallagher legacy? Pretty good I must say. My first listens it was hit and miss. One song was a bit meandering (nowhere near the levels of Beady Eye's sophomore release) or 60's mod that made me think I was watching Ocean's 11. Then the next song would be uptempo, ethereal and easy to get stuck in the brain. Personal highlights:

In the Heat of the Moment, first song released months back, still great, still rocking. Catchy and easily repeatable. Talking about cracking whips, being at his side, not letting go and other pseudo lovey dovey jazz.

Lock All the Doors, off and running from the first second, it sounds like another song I can't quite put my finger on or maybe I've just listened to a lot of Noel demos and it's all blending together...Nice upbeat charger though, what I expect or enjoy most from Noel.

The Dying of the Light & The Right Stuff, middle album paunch, just deliberately paced talking about streets paved with gold, no time to get out, it'll be alright if you dance with me tonight, etc. Kinda dreamy and out there. Right Stuff same thing, slow starter with sexy saxophone out of nowhere and then some piano, horns, drums, guitars, etc. Kinda wonder where these songs are going.

You Know We Can't Go Back, arguably my favorite track off the album. Just a here we go, off and moving long song about stuff being all right and you know we can't go back, taking you to a one horse town, running away, sun's out, the wind's in your hair, grab your gal (or guy) and just go. Love this song.

Ballad of the Mighty I, another upbeat, just gets moving tune, kinda sounds like a break up song.

In typical fashion, Noel leaves perfectly excellent song, Do the Damage off the album. A great charging, moody track about dreams and people dragging you down but not stopping the power of love.

Overall a great listen with several songs that get stuck in my head. Will have to try and score concert tix on Craigslist closer to his Los Angeles date.

Chief Goods: Dark Side of the Room aka Wheat is Murder

"It is called In the Heat of the Moment, is it great? Of course it is. What does it mean?
It don't mean anything.  Will you love it?  Yes, you will."
- Noel Gallagher on his latest single
Exciting news for all Brothers Gallagher and OASIS fans today as The Chief, singer/songwriter Noel Gallagher, announced a new single, album and world tour coming soon via Facebook.  Following up 2011's well received Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will be Chasing Yesterday, out March 2nd of 2015.  March?  That's 5 months from now!  New single In the Heat of the Moment drops on November 16th and I'm sure another single or two will follow.  UK, Ireland and European concert dates have already been set for March while North America and Japan will follow.  Heat is online now and it's fucking excellent, very easy to listen to, very Noel, very upbeat, forward charging, moody and will probably be fucking beautiful played live.  I hit repeat at least a half dozen times because the track just isn't long enough.
Gallagher partook in a fan Q&A where the very first question was in regards to an OASIS reunion with perennially angry at the world yet hilarious and brilliant brother Liam, who is currently fronting Beady Eye.  Noel showed no interest in getting the UK's most popular band from the 90's back together.  The Chief went on to explain that after coming off tour on the first High Flying Birds album, he was bored at home and started tinkering on a new album.  The sessions finished early, right after the World Cup.  While Heat is a pretty digestible track, psychedelic, "space jazz" and think Pink Floyd were used to describe some other songs on the new album.  Lock All the Doors, has taken Gallagher 23 years to complete.
After OASIS imploded at a French concert in 2009, brother Liam took the remaining band members and immediately formed Beady Eye.  Their first album, 2011's Different Gear, Still Speeding was a stripped down, hard charging (in typical Liam fashion) pop-rock album with pianos and back up singers adding a 50's motif that was a bit strange at first but I really dug it when I laid down on the floor and listened to the album in it's entirety as one should when digesting new music.  Reviews were mixed although NME did nominate them for Best New Band and the album debuted in the Top 10 of half a dozen countries, moving 170,000 copies in the UK total.  Four Letter Word, Bring the Light, For Anyone and Standing on the Edge of the Noise were all solid efforts that utilized Liam's sneering delivery and rock n' roll sensibility.  Vowing not to play OASIS tracks live, concerts were a subdued affair as decades long fans no longer knew the lyrics to be able to sing along.  2013's follow up BE rode a nice wave of hype as Liam and the boys wanted to make something completely different, feeling that the masses rejected Different Gear's vibe.  Instead of giving us more fast tempo rock and roll snippets, we got a meandering, plodding, goes nowhere album I honestly had trouble listening to or caring about.  By now, Liam let a couple OASIS tracks sneak into the set list but sales were weaker than Different Gear.
Also released in 2011 was Noel's solo album, simply dubbed Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds that played like a light OASIS album since he was responsible for writing most of their arena anthem classics.  Reviews were good and the album was certified Platinum in the UK, selling over 700,000 copies and landing on several year end best of lists as well as nominations from the Brit Awards, NME and Q.  If I Had a Gun has become one of my favorite songs in recent memory while AKA...What a Life, Dream On, AKA...Broken Arrow are all fine, light rock tunes and makes for a great car ride album.

Chief Goods: Birthday Bashing

“This guy came up to me from some band and he said that ‘Man, I’d hate to be you right now, no privacy at all’ and I was thinking, ‘Sure thing man, I have a fucking Rolls Royce, a million dollars in the bank, a fucking mansion and my own jet and you think you’d feel sorry for me? What are you? I’d hate to be you, broke as hell living in the dole.’”  - Noel Gallagher

I don't know how I missed it but yesterday was Noel Gallagher's 47th birthday.  A former roadie turned chief writer and co-singer in gargantuan Brit-pop band OASIS, brothers Noel and Liam helped change the U.K. music landscape with their catchy anthems best heard in a stadium and their hilarious sense of self that either alienated listeners or turned them into lifelong fans.  Over 7 studio albums spanning 14 years, OASIS won multiple awards while amassing 22 top 10 hits, selling 70 million albums worldwide and being dubbed the Most Successful Act in the UK between 1995 and 2005.  After years of brotherly friction, OASIS imploded backstage at a show in France in 2009.

Since then little brother Liam's reassembled OASIS sans Noel, Beady Eye has released 2 albums.  I quite dug their 2011 release Different Gear, Still Speeding with it's hard charging, guitar and piano fueled riffs but their 2013 album BE left me cold and disappointed with it's glacier paced, meandering style.  Noel's solo effort, The High Flying Birds sounds more like OASIS because, well, he wrote 98% of the songs the band was known for.  Catchy, melodic and uptempo, the debut album sold better and received more critical accolades.  I got to see them in concert when they did two nights at UCLA's Royce Hall a couple years ago and it was a solid show with Noel's live vocals holding up much better than his hard partying little brothers.

Both brothers are equal parts hilarious and brilliant in totally different ways with Noel being more clever and thoughtful while Liam's view of the world and himself is amusing and quite inspiring in this day and age of political correctness and popularity contests.

I know you think you deserve an explanation on the meaning of life:

Chief Goods: Talking Back

In case you didn't know, Noel Gallagher aka The Chief is the fucking boss.  Every interview he does holds nuggets, nay, bars of gold.  Some might say he just talks shit about people he doesn't like but they'd be wrong, he talks shit about EVERYONE.  Noel's got an opinion on just about every topic or person imaginable and grudges that go back to the 80's.  For example, take this supercut of commentary he did for Oasis' Time Flies, a look at their tumultuous and epic career spanning 15 years, 8 albums and 27 singles.  The Chief lets loose on ill fitting clothes, the absurdity of music videos, Adidas, being uninspired, Robbie Williams, homosexuality, having six girlfriends and more.

Chief Goods: Happy New Year

Who's ready for their lumps?!

"She was on TV recently, Miley Ray Cyrus, and it was just like, "What the fuck is all this about?" I don't know. It's a shame, because it puts all the other female artists back about fucking five years. Now, Adele and Emili Sande – that music, to me, is like music for fucking grannies, but at least it's got some kind of credibility.

It's just embarrassing. Be good. Don't be outrageous. Anybody can be outrageous! I could go to the Rolling Stone office and fucking shit on top of a boiled egg, right? And people would go, "Wow, fucking hell, that's outrageous!" But is it any good? No, because, essentially, it's just a shit on top of a boiled egg. That's all it is. If I was to go to your office and play you a song that I'd just written that was amazing, that would be better, wouldn't it?"

- Noel Gallagher on Miley Cyrus and women in the music industry

Chief Goods: Business Hours

Notes from The Chief:

"People shouldn't start work before 10 o'clock in the morning. People shouldn't work weekends unless they work in the service industry and they're getting paid double time. Thou Shalt Not Work Weekends. I don't like workaholics. Don't f***ing trust them. Why are they working? I don't trust busy c***s. That's how wars start: busy f***ers. If terrorism had a weekend off, eventually they'd have a year off. Eventually they'd go, "F*** this - blowing up shit? Football's on." Thou shalt not be arsed."

With insight like that, he can give Bruce a run for his money on being known as "The Boss".

Thank you for the good times:

Chief Goods: GQ Awards

"You will never be as cool as your dad.  Remember that"
     - Noel Gallagher

The Chief himself has just won the GQ "Icon" Award (and took a nice dig at the Foreign Secretary in attendance).  Plans are in order for a follow up to High Flying Birds but apparently Noel's not too keen on getting back on the road for a year and a half...

A great backstage interview here.
